07/03/2008 - MAN CHARGED WITH WEEKEND STABBING

One of the charges filed against a teenage stabbing suspect in Rochester alleges the crime was committed for the benefit of a gang. 18-year-old Kamel Abukar is also charged with first and second-degree assault, along with a felony riot count, for allegedly stabbing a 17-year-old boy during a confrontation late Saturday night in the Kutzky Park neighborhood. The complaint says the victim suffered a life-threatening knife wound to his abdomen that required surgery. Authorities allege the stabbing occurred after the victim and his friends came across Abukar and two companions while walking along 11th avenue northwest and the two groups began exchanging gang-themed insults.
07/03/2008 - TJ MAXX ATTACKER SENTENCED TO PRISON

A Rochester man who attacked a woman in a restroom at the T.J. Maxx Plaza last year and then made off with her purse was sentenced to prison today. 40-year old Bernard Williams was given a 58-month sentence for his earlier plea to a 1st degree aggravated robbery charge. He told the court he was on drugs that day and doesn't remember much about the vicious attack. Williams admitted forcing his way into the stall the woman was in and then smashing her face into the wall after she refused to give up her purse. She then let go and he ran off. He was later caught after trying to cash one of the victim's checks in Kenyon, which is where she lives.
07/03/2008 - WOMAN SENT TO PRISON FOR BAR FIGHT

A woman who was convicted in May of attacking a man with a bar glass at a Rochester bar was sentenced to 4 1/2 years in prison today. 27-year old Amran Roble was convicted by an Olmsted County jury in May of 1st degree assault and 2 lesser counts. She was accused of arguing with a man at the former Ultra Lounge bar in November, 2005 and then hitting him across the face with a glass, leaving a gash from his ear to his mouth. The prosecutor in the case had offered Roble a plea agreement but she rejected it. The prison term she was given is 2 1/2 years lower than what's recommended under sentencing guidelines.
07/03/2008 - TRUCK CRASH SENDS ETHANOL INTO ROOT RIVER

A tanker truck crash shutdown a stretch of a busy highway in Fillmore County this afternoon. The State Patrol says the truck flipped over on Highway 16 near Lanesboro around noon and began leaking ethanol, which made its way into the nearby Root River. The crash forced the State Patrol to close Highway 16 from the junction with Highway 52 to the east edge of Lanesboro. Personnel from the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency and the Department of Natural Resources were called to help with the clean up.
07/03/2008 - ANOTHER RACE SET-UP FOR OLMSTED COUNT BOARD SEAT

A race has been set-up for another Olmsted County Board seat. Businessman Terry Throndson has filed for the District 7 Commissioner's position now held by Judy Ohly, who previously filed for re-election. Also today, incumbent sixth ward Rochester City Councilmember Sandra Means filed for re-election. She is being challenged by Gary Smith.
07/03/2008 - FIRST MN DISTRICT TO GO WITH 4 DAY WEEK

Minnesota Education Commissioner Alice Seagren has given the MCCRAY School District the go-ahead for a four-day week this coming school year--the first time that's ever happened in the state. Superintendent Greg Schmidt says the rising cost of fuel is one of the main reasons for cutting Mondays out of the school week, which will save about $5000 a day or $65,000 for the entire school year.
07/03/2008 - MURDER INDICTMENTS IN 1985 WINONA CASE

A grand jury has indicted a Minnesota man and two Wisconsin residents in a Winona murder case dating back more than 20 years. Prosecutors say 42-year-old Jack Nissalke of Winona and the two others were involved in the 1985 fatal stabbing of Ada Sennenfelder. The 42-year-old woman was found dead in her Winona home in June of 1985. She had been stabbed multiple times. The crime remained in the cold case file until investigators developed new evidence in recent years, including DNA samples that were subjected to more modern forensic techniques. The 3 are now facing 1st degree murder charges.

It is July, right? Several cities in northern Minnesota reported low temps in the upper 30's this morning. The coldest reading came from Embarrass with a low of 34-degrees. Orr had a low of 36 and Big Fork hit 37-degrees.
07/03/2008 - TASTE OF MN BEGINS TODAY

The 2008 Taste of Minnesota opens today on Harriet Island in St. Paul. Admission to the 4-day celebration of food and music is free. Concerts on all of the event's stages are also free. The Taste of Minnesota runs through Sunday from 1 p.m. to 10:40 p.m., but will open at 11 a.m. tomorrow. A fireworks display will cap off each day.
07/03/2008 - A SHOCKING BRIDGE

A pedestrian bridge in Maple Grove has been shut down until further notice after several bicyclists received an electrical shock while crossing it. Park officials were alerted to the problem and contacted Xcel Energy, which has power lines running close to the bridge. Officials believe the low-voltage shock being felt by bicyclists is likely due to an electrical field generated by the power lines.
07/03/2008 - MORE VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR REPUBLICAN CONVENTION

With less than two months to go until the Republican National Convention in St. Paul, the host committee is putting out another call for volunteers. There was a big surge of volunteers that signed up after the mayors of Minneapolis and St. Paul put the call out last month. The RNC is using pro wrestler Mister Kennedy and Minnesota Viking Matt Birk to get the message across this time around. The 2 star in public service announcements that begin airing in the Twin Cities this week. Nearly 8000 people have signed up to volunteer, but 2000 volunteers are still needed. There is good news for those heading to a campground or lake cabin for the July 4th weekend. The weather across much of the state is expected to be pleasant through most of the holiday weekend. But it is starting on the cool side as numerous northern cities had lows in the upper 30's this morning. Big Fork had dropped to 37 degrees at 6 this morning.
07/03/2008 - BIG FIRE NEAR ST PETER

Nearly two dozen fire departments battled a fire at a storage building in Green Isle, Minnesota that continued to burn early this morning. The blaze began around 10 a.m. yesterday at Shamrock Storage, which covers about two city blocks on the north end of the Sibley County community. Officials say battling the fire has put a strain on local water supplies. Green Isle Fire Chief Dean Stoeckman said although firefighters had the blaze under control yesterday, it continued to burn because the roof caved in on a large number of wood pallets. The building stored mostly Nintendo games and PlayStations. There were no injuries. Green Isle is located north of St. Peter.

It will cost Minnesotans more to travel to their July 4th destination this year than a year ago. MinnesotaGasPrices.com is reporting this morning the average cost for a gallon of regular stands at $3.93, up about a buck from a year ago. Rochester stations began raising their prices overnight to $3.93, a new record for the city. The higher cost of gasoline is affecting the travel plans of millions of Americans as many have indicated they will stick closer to home this July 4th weekend, marking the first decline in 10 years.
